How to research?

1. Simple search

a. What is the research about?

The research you are about to make focuses both on digital documents reported on the portal (see the contributors list) and on the thematic dossiers which enrich the portal.

The search allows you to check if documents matching your needs exist.

b. Where is the search bar?

To do research, use the simple search bar. This search bar is on every page of the website and offers you a direct and permanent access to the contents of the portal.

c. How to research?

Doing research is very simple: as in any search engine, you just have to type the words that match your search in the dedicated bar. You can type the name of a document, an author, or words that describe a subject.

The search engine will give you the closest results, according to what you have typed.

The more detailed your search is, the more the results you will get will be accurate.

Conversely, typing a single word while doing research on a specific topic will help you get a larger number of results.

d. When I am doing research, what do the proposals displayed correspond to?

When you enter text in the search bar, search terms suggestions appear. These search terms come from the documents on the portal, and help you narrow your search. You just have to click on one of these search terms to do research on a specific topic.

e. How to check the availability of documents?

e.1. On the results page

On the results page, you will see that a quote is attached to all the documents. Consultation is subject to 3 modalities:

  • Free consultation: the document is directly accessible online, on the contributor's website,
  • Upon registration: the document is accessible on the contributor's website, but you will have to register first,
  • Consultation on the spot: the document or object visible in situ, at the contributor's place.

You will find one the three mentions on the results page:

e.2. On the details sheet

You will see a mention of availability on the details sheet:

f. How to find documents of personal interest in the results list?

You have just made your research and you are facing many results. You can narrow your search via the menu « Narrow » on the right.

The search engine is faceted, which means you can add filters to narrow your search and get less results. The number of documents matching each facet is shown in brackets.

How to use facets

The filters available include:

  • Type of document,
  • Author,
  • Editor,
  • Town,
  • Department,
  • Language,
  • Contributor who owns the document,
  • Modality for availability

You just have to click on whatever you find interesting: the results of your initial research will be narrowed. You can repeat the operation as much as necessary.

You will find your research criteria at the top of the results page, in the « My search » area. You can delete one of these criteria by clicking on the cross on the right.

g. How to sort results?

By default all search results are sorted by relevance, which means they will better match your research needs.

you can change the sorting order by other ones:

  • Sort titles in alphabetical order
  • Sort authors in alphabetical order
  • Sort the year of publication in chronological order (if this information is available in the document sheet)

Change the sorting order

h. How to save a selection of documents of personal interest?

As you make your research, you can select documents of personal interest and save your selection. You just have to click on the box on the right of the document and add it to your selection.

The document will automatically be added to your selection in the window on the top left of your screen.

Select documents

Your selection will be saved as long as you browse the website. You can:

  • Delete a document from your selection by clicking the button bouton supprimer.jpg
  • Empty your selection by clicking the button bouton fermer.png
  • View your selection by clicking the button bouton visualiser.png

Once you have seen your document, you can export it by clicking the button . This will allow you to export the document in PDF, CSV or HTML format.

i. How to print documents of personal interest?

You can print documents of personal interest by exporting your selection in PDF format. To do so, just click the button .Then you can open the freshly downloaded document and print it.

j. How to view the details sheet?

To view the details sheet, click on the document in your research results page.

On the details sheet, you will see several pieces of information:

  • The detailed information of the document,
  • A link to the document on the contributor's website,
  • The type of document,
  • The modality of consultation of the document

Details sheet

k. What does the permalink correspond to on the details sheet?

The « permalink » on the details sheet allows to insert a link to this document in another document.

To do so, just right-click on « permalink », click on the option « Copy permalink ». Then select « Insert »and « Hyperlink », then paste the address copied in your document window.

2. Conduct an advanced search

a. How to use truncation?

To make a truncation, use the character *. These truncations can relate to words in the plural (e.g.: Hors* for the words Horse and Horses), or words from the same family (e.g.: Musi* for music, musicology, etc.).

The search engine performs most of the truncation automatically, so you will not have to use the character * consistently.

b. How to use the operators « And », « Where », « Except »?

You can use the operators AND, OR and NOT during your search.

  • AND is an intersection operator. It allows to make a search on two terms (or more), which have to be in the sheet in order to appear in the results list. E.g.: the search « histoire AND brest » will give you results about Brest's history.
Search « histoire AND brest »
  • OR is a union operator. It allows to make a search on two terms (or more): the sheets displayed will feature at least one of these two terms. E.g.: the search « église OR chapelle » will give results featuring église, chapelle, or both terms.
  • NOT is an exclusion operator. It allows to search for one term while excluding everything that's related to a second one. E.g.: the search « carte NOT cadastre » will start a search on maps, while excluding cadastral maps.
How to use the exclusion operator

When you are doing research using these operators, remember they have priorities: the operators AND and NOT carry more weight than OR.

c. What if I'm not sure of the spelling?

If you're not sure about the spelling of a term, insert the character « ~ » before the search term: the search engine will try to look for other ways to spell the term.

Find the closest search

Note: if you make a mistake and do not use the character « ~ », the search engine will search for the word with the closest spelling anyway.

d. How to search for an exact phrase?

You can focus your search on a specific phrase: quote your search between inverted commas « », to find the documents that contain the specific phrase you are looking for.
