How to research?
1. Simple search
a. What is the research about?
The research you are about to make focuses both on digital documents reported on the portal (see the contributors list) and on the thematic dossiers which enrich the portal.
The search allows you to check if documents matching your needs exist.
b. Where is the search bar?
To do research, use the simple search bar. This search bar is on every page of the website and offers you a direct and permanent access to the contents of the portal.
c. How to research?
Doing research is very simple: as in any search engine, you just have to type the words that match your search in the dedicated bar. You can type the name of a document, an author, or words that describe a subject.
The search engine will give you the closest results, according to what you have typed.
The more detailed your search is, the more the results you will get will be accurate.
Conversely, typing a single word while doing research on a specific topic will help you get a larger number of results.
d. When I am doing research, what do the proposals displayed correspond to?
When you enter text in the search bar, search terms suggestions appear. These search terms come from the documents on the portal, and help you narrow your search. You just have to click on one of these search terms to do research on a specific topic.
e. How to check the availability of documents?

f. How to find documents of personal interest in the results list?
You have just made your research and you are facing many results. You can narrow your search via the menu « Narrow » on the right.
The search engine is faceted, which means you can add filters to narrow your search and get less results. The number of documents matching each facet is shown in brackets.

You just have to click on whatever you find interesting: the results of your initial research will be narrowed. You can repeat the operation as much as necessary.
You will find your research criteria at the top of the results page, in the « My search » area. You can delete one of these criteria by clicking on the cross on the right.
g. How to sort results?
By default all search results are sorted by relevance, which means they will better match your research needs.

h. How to save a selection of documents of personal interest?
As you make your research, you can select documents of personal interest and save your selection. You just have to click on the box on the right of the document and add it to your selection.
The document will automatically be added to your selection in the window on the top left of your screen.
Your selection will be saved as long as you browse the website. You can:
Once you have seen your document, you can export it by clicking the button
. This will allow you to export the document in PDF, CSV or HTML format.
i. How to print documents of personal interest?
You can print documents of personal interest by exporting your selection in PDF format. To do so, just click the button
.Then you can open the freshly downloaded document and print it.
j. How to view the details sheet?
To view the details sheet, click on the document in your research results page.
On the details sheet, you will see several pieces of information:
k. What does the permalink correspond to on the details sheet?
The « permalink » on the details sheet allows to insert a link to this document in another document.
To do so, just right-click on « permalink », click on the option « Copy permalink ». Then select « Insert »and « Hyperlink », then paste the address copied in your document window.
2. Conduct an advanced search
a. How to use truncation?
To make a truncation, use the character *. These truncations can relate to words in the plural (e.g.: Hors* for the words Horse and Horses), or words from the same family (e.g.: Musi* for music, musicology, etc.).
The search engine performs most of the truncation automatically, so you will not have to use the character * consistently.
b. How to use the operators « And », « Where », « Except »?
You can use the operators AND, OR and NOT during your search.
When you are doing research using these operators, remember they have priorities: the operators AND and NOT carry more weight than OR.
c. What if I'm not sure of the spelling?
If you're not sure about the spelling of a term, insert the character « ~ » before the search term: the search engine will try to look for other ways to spell the term.
Note: if you make a mistake and do not use the character « ~ », the search engine will search for the word with the closest spelling anyway.
d. How to search for an exact phrase?
You can focus your search on a specific phrase: quote your search between inverted commas « », to find the documents that contain the specific phrase you are looking for.
